Magnetic Tiles for 3 Year Olds: What to Buy + 10 Easy Builds
Magnetic tiles are one of the few toys that come out nearly every day. At three, children are just working out that flat shapes can click together into something 3D. A wobbly wall turns into a house, the house turns into a garage, and before long there's a rocket on the kitchen table.
Below are the magnetic tiles for 3 year olds we'd actually buy, how many they need, and 10 easy builds to try together. Everything here is from Cleverclixx and labelled for ages 3 and up. The sets all fit together, so you can add to them over the years.
The short version
- First set: around 45 to 60 tiles is plenty to start with, and the Original Pack (60 pieces) is a good choice.
- Add later: curved tiles for domes and arches, or a ball run once they start building tall.
- Safety: stick to sets labelled 3+. The magnets sit inside the tiles, so take any cracked one out of play.
How many magnetic tiles does a 3 year old need?
Fewer than you'd think. At three, most building stays low: walls, boxes, simple houses and towers made to be knocked down. Around 45 to 60 tiles gives them enough squares and triangles to finish a build without running out, and it all still fits in one box at tidy-up time. If older brothers or sisters will be joining in, a bigger set saves arguments.

10 easy magnetic tile builds for 3 year olds
Start each one together, then step back and let them change it. There's no wrong way to build.
- A flat picture. Lay tiles flat on the floor to make a sun, a flower or a face. It's the easiest way to learn which shapes fit together.
- A cube. Six squares make a box. Fold four up into walls, then add a floor and a lid. Hide a small toy inside for a surprise.
- A tall tower. Stack cubes on top of each other and count them as you go. Knocking it down is half the point.
- A house. Four square walls and two triangles for the roof. Leave a gap for the door.
- A garage for cars. Three walls and a roof, big enough to drive a toy car in and out.
- A rocket. A tall column of squares with triangles at the top for the nose and at the bottom for fins. With the Space Mission Pack, add a light-up tile as the engine and dim the room.
- A pyramid. One square on the floor and four triangles leaning in to meet at the top.
- A zoo or farm. Low walls make pens for animal figures. Ask them which animal lives where.
- A tunnel. Two walls with a roof across the top, for cars and trains to go through.
- A rainbow wall. Build a wall in stripes of colour, or stick tiles to the fridge door and sort them by colour.
Good to know
- Pastel or intense? It's only the colour. Pastel tiles are softer and look lovely in a playroom, while the intense ones are bright and bold. They all fit together.
- Mixing brands. Cleverclixx sets all work together. We can't promise how other brands' tiles connect, so we'd keep to one brand.
- Tidying up. Tiles stack flat, so a shallow box or drawer is easier than a deep basket.
Quick answers
Are magnetic tiles suitable for 3 year olds?
Yes, if the set is labelled for ages 3 and up, like all the Cleverclixx sets above. Check the tiles now and then, and remove any that are cracked.
What can a 3 year old build with magnetic tiles?
Simple 3D shapes like cubes, houses, towers, garages and rockets. They'll mostly build low and wide at first, then taller as their hands get steadier.
Are magnetic tiles good for learning?
They're brilliant for shapes, colours, counting and spatial awareness. As children get older, the same tiles come in handy for maths at school.
