STEM Gifts by Age: Our Favourite Science Kits and Toys from 3 to 10+

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and maths, and the best STEM toys don't feel like lessons at all. They're the kits that get children asking "how does that work?" and "what if I try this?", and they're some of the most played-with presents we know.

Here are our favourite STEM gifts by age, from first magnetic tiles at three to crystal growing at ten. The ages are the makers' own, and we've kept to things that are screen-free and genuinely fun.

STEM gifts for 3 and 4 year olds

At this age it's all hands-on: building, matching, counting and spotting things. Look for open-ended toys they can come back to again and again.

Good to know

  • Check what's needed. Some kits need AA batteries or a small screwdriver, which aren't in the box. It's worth having them ready for Christmas morning.
  • Small parts. Lots of science kits have small parts, so keep them away from younger brothers and sisters.
  • Build it together. Even confident kids enjoy a grown-up helping with the first kit, and it's lovely time together.
