Many four year olds ask a lot of questions. They often love rules, games and being trusted with "real" things, and their pretend play has whole storylines now. In England most children start Reception the September after they turn 4, so this is also a year of getting ready for school.
Our toys for 4 year olds mix things to make and build with games to play together and toys that quietly practise numbers and time.
What helps at this age
- Games with rules: simple games like Four in a Row, Shut the Box and stacking games practise counting, turn-taking and losing kindly.
- Pretend play with props: a post office, coffee shop or magician's kit gives stories more detail, and lots to talk about.
- Building and engineering: ball runs, race tracks and train sets let them plan, test and try again.
- Reading together: BookTrust encourages letting children choose what to read, even if they pick the same story again. A table-top theatre makes a great way to retell favourites.
How to choose toys for a 4 year old
- Look for toys with a bit of challenge. If it is all done in five minutes, it will not hold them.
- Games are brilliant at this age, as long as a round takes less than 15 minutes or so.
- Craft kits with clear steps build confidence. Save the trickiest ones for 5 or 6.
- Number trays, clocks and maps feel like play but can help with school skills.
