Toys for 5 year olds
By five, most children are at school, and they come home full of questions about how things work. It is a great age for first science kits, games with real strategy and building sets that take a whole afternoon.
Our toys for 5 year olds are chosen to feel like play while building on what they are learning in Reception and Year 1.
What helps at this age
- Hands-on science: first kits like the Solar Rover Robot or Creepy Crawly Digging Lab work quickly and look exciting, so they keep interest.
- Numbers and puzzles: sudoku, fractions trays and stopwatch games turn maths into a challenge they want to beat.
- Building: magnetic tiles, wooden blocks and train sets let them design something big and see it through.
- Moving and making: garden games like quoits are a fun way to get moving on dry afternoons.
How to choose toys for a 5 year old
- Check the age on science kits. Most of ours start at 5, and an adult helping makes them more fun.
- Pick one kit at a time. Finishing something is part of the joy.
- Games now work for the whole family, so choose ones you will enjoy too.
- Creative kits like spin art and clay are great for quiet time after school.
Questions parents ask
What are the best toys for a 5 year old?
A first science kit, a family game and a building set are a strong mix. Kids' cameras are a big favourite at this age too.
What are good learning toys for 5 year olds?
Science kits, a teaching clock, fractions trays and sudoku can all support early reading, maths and science through play.
Do science kits need an adult?
For 5 year olds, yes, a little. Reading the steps together and doing it side by side is half the fun.
