Christmas Gifts for 2-Year-Olds: Toys They'll Actually Play With

Two-year-olds know exactly what they like, and they want to do everything themselves. That makes them brilliant fun to buy for at Christmas, as long as the present keeps up with them. Here are the toys and gifts we'd pick for a 2-year-old this year: things that suit their age, get them playing on their own and will still be loved well into next year.

What makes a good Christmas present for a 2-year-old?

At two, children are running, climbing, chatting and copying everything the grown-ups do. The best toys for 2-year-olds usually do one of these things:

  • Let them copy you. Dolls to look after, play food to "cook" and bags to pack just like yours.
  • Burn off energy. Ride-ons and scooters build balance, confidence and leg strength.
  • Keep little hands busy. Bead mazes and stacking toys help them concentrate for longer.
  • Give them independence. Their own backpack or lunch bag makes them feel very grown up.

The big present: a scooter that grows with them

Scoot & Ride Highwaykick 1 (ages 1–5). If you're choosing one main present, this is it. It starts as a sit-on push-along with a low seat, then converts into a scooter when they're ready, with no tools needed. Some two-year-olds are ready to scoot straight away, and those who aren't can keep using the seat. It comes in ash, lemon and more colours, plus the Lifestyle leopard print.

Dolls and pretend play

Role play takes off around two. Feeding a baby, putting a doll to bed or cooking dinner in a play kitchen is how toddlers make sense of their world, and it's wonderful for language too.

More pretend play they'll grow into

Two is when pretend play really takes off. These Bigjigs Toys sets are all suitable from 18 months or 2 years:

A play mat that tidies itself away

Two-year-olds make a lot of mess! The Play & Go Noomad Play Mat & Storage Bag (£34.99) is a 140cm illustrated mat that's perfect for cars, animals and figures. When playtime's over, pull the drawstrings and it gathers up into a bag with every toy inside. Choose from Jungle, Circus or Fairy World.

For a bigger present, the Play & Go Tiloo Puzzle Play Mat (£99.99) is a soft foam alphabet mat that folds into a toy box or playhouse. See all our play mats.

Something that's just theirs

Two-year-olds love having their own things, especially if they look like a grown-up's.

For little ones who love outdoors

A practical present can still be a hit. Two-year-olds love puddles, and colour-changing wellies make rainy days exciting: the raindrop print changes colour when it gets wet. Browse our kids' wellies, puddle suits and raincoats, in sizes from toddler upwards.

Nearly three?

If they're turning three soon, Cleverclixx magnetic tiles and Hoppstar kids' cameras are both suitable from 3 years, and they're two of our favourite new gifts this year. See more in our Christmas gifts for 3-year-olds.

Our tips for buying for a 2-year-old

  • Check the age label. Lots of playsets are 3+ because of small parts, so look for 18 months+ or 2+ on the box.
  • Follow their obsession. Diggers, animals, babies or cooking: lean into what they already love.
  • Think open-ended. Toys that can be played with in lots of ways last longest.
  • Order early. We offer Priority Delivery (1 to 2 working days if you order by 12 noon, Monday to Friday), free UK delivery on orders over £65, and Klarna if you'd like to spread the cost.

Frequently asked questions

What should I buy a 2-year-old for Christmas?

Choose something that matches how they play now: a ride-on or scooter for active toddlers, a doll or play food for pretend play, and a bead maze or stacking toy for quieter moments. Check the age label says it's suitable for under-3s.

What toys are best for 2-year-olds' development?

Pretend play toys support language and social skills, ride-ons build balance and coordination, and hands-on toys like bead mazes build fine motor skills and concentration.

Is a scooter a good present for a 2-year-old?

Yes. A scooter with a seat, like the Highwaykick 1, works at two whether they're ready to scoot or not, and keeps going until around five.
